Easy spin at home

I was definitely not feeling in the mood to exercise but my doc's orders to get the weight in control weighed heavily on my mind (no pun intended). Thus, I was cycling at 9PM at night with very little excitement...

Notes:

I went to the gym planning on doing a light spin on the recumbent bike but saw all my old spinning classmates and felt obligated to join in on the fun. I'm glad I did because it's definitely more fun than regular workout by myself. However, my huge tummy prohibits me from bending over and holding onto the handlebars. So I sat and spinned with my arms to my side or rested on my belly.

Grandma had DS so DH and I headed to the local park for trail running. It was the first time I've been off-road or off-mill in a long time and it was heavenly...

We went to a park that has a paved trail that loops around a playground. My thought was that we'd run and then DS could play. Of course, as soon as we pulled up and he saw the slides and swings I was a goner. Nothing but 31 minutes of constant whining about wanting to go the playground!

Another run with DS in the jogging stroller. There was a light drizzle and no one was out. It made me feel like a real runner again to be out in the "elements". I've spent so much of this pregnancy on the treadmill I was beginning to feel like a wuss. Nope, I still got it :)

I dusted off the jogging stroller and took DS out to enjoy the unseasonably nice weather. He had a blast chomping on crackers, slurping from his sippy and quacking at ducks. I, on the other hand, was sweating, huffing and puffing, and feeling the desire to find the nearest restroom. Nevertheless, it felt good to be back out with my little running buddy.

I've noticed that my rear end is increasingly sore while on the bike. There are probably two explanations:
1. My hindquarters are so humungous they don't fit on the seat properly
2. The baby is placing a lot of pressure on my sensitive areas

Of course, in my case, the soreness has to be due to #2 :) (Ok, yes I admit I am in denial that I look like a linebacker from behind...)

Bibs?

RW.com asks "Bibs: What's the Point?":

My guesses to why we still get bibs in a chip timed race:
  • The race photographers association has a powerful union
  • If you are paying $100 for a race, you better get more than an over-sized cotton t-shirt
  • The race directors think it's funny to see everyone sporting band-aids on their fingers race morning from nerves-induced safety pin stabbings from those trying to affix their bibs

I started a new job today. There's nothing like trying to learn and get acclimated to a new job and company with a maternity leave looming right around the corner. I feel like I have a 20 miler to do but only the time alloted for 15. I've got a lot of miles ahead of me but I have to do them quick because my time is limited!

I felt lousy on the first running set but kept with it for the second one based on my experience of the other day. However, things did not get any better and I felt some tightening and general uncomfortableness so I cut it short. I think the baby was in a bad position which made things extra hard today. Oh well. At this point in the game, any steps I take should be viewed as a bonus and not expected. Of course, that's easier said than done.

I struggled through the first run segment but felt fine on the next two. I think my preggo body just needs awhile to get kick started. I have to keep this in mind when I approach workouts over the coming weeks (10 to go!). If it's tough at first, keep going. If it's still tough, then I should take it easy.

"Maternal exercise benefits mother and infant"

Not only am I keeping the pregnancy pounds in submission, by running through my pregnancy I am giving my little one a kick start on its cardiovascular health. Score!

I wish I could print out this article and tape it to my shirt when I am exercising. Perhaps it would keep those pregnancy "experts" at bay (you know - the ones lacking a MD but not lacking for advice of how I shouldn't be running).

From Yahoo Health/Reuters:

Exercise during pregnancy has cardiovascular benefits not just for the mother but for the developing fetus as well, according to research presented Monday at the 121st annual meeting of the American Physiological Society, part of the Experimental Biology 2008 scientific conference.
...

"When the mom exercises during pregnancy, the unborn baby gets the same type of training effect that you would see in an adult - so you see the lower heart rate and also improved heart rate variability, which is evidence of improvements in the nervous system of the heart."

"Maternal exercise may be the earliest intervention to improve the heart of children and possibly the best," May concluded.

My BOB Ironman Dualie with car set adapter and drink holder arrived today! I am giddy with excitement!

I will post more about this beauty once I con DH into assembling it...

How to lose baby weight the easy celebrity way

(In case you missed it, the subject line is dripping in sarcasm)

I believe the biggest disservice to pregnant women is celebrity moms. They always seem to lose the baby weight magically over night.

After my first baby, I had 20 pounds to lose. It took me 20 weeks despite training for a marathon, breastfeeding and eating relatively well. According to everything I have read, 1-2 pounds a week is healthy post-baby weight loss. So I was right in line with expectations.

So why didn't I lose the weight overnight like Jamie, Tori, Mel, et al? Oh yeah, I don't have a personal trainer, a personal chef, a nanny, a maid, an assistant....

I wasn't really feeling the core work but convinced myself to do it by watching The Biggest Loser. Ali looks amazing! I really hope she wins. Not only does she deserve it, but they do need a female BL already.

We didn't have our regular instructor today. The new lady was big into jumps. While jumps are good for my aching (and enormous) rear as they get me off the saddle, they also require a good bit of core strength. Despite my gallant efforts to do core exercises throughout this pregnancy, I must admit my core is on extended vacation right now. It was a tough workout!

"Is it worth it to buy organic"

msnbc.com has a nice article about which fruits and veggies are worth buying organic and which ones you save your money on.

Right now, we only are getting organic milk but I think I will try expanding my organic purchases to celery and apples as well. I was glad to hear that you don't need to buy organic bananas because we consume a ton of them and buying organic would put me in the poor house.

I have started undergoing a rigorous rehab routine which seems to be working. Basically icing and stretching three times a day. Ok, maybe not rigorous to lay people but have you seen how difficult it is for a fat preggo lady to get down into hurdler's stretch?

Anyways, it seems to be paying off and the knee feels greatly improved.

Knee Pain Continues :(

My left knee continues to cause me pain. The other night I could barely sleep due to the pain. I am taking Tylenol but it doesn't do much. I would kill for a maximum strength Advil right now.

I've been icing and resting too. The resting is driving me insane. I feel like such a fat blob and I really want to keep running (or should I say waddling). Alas, I probably should take it easy until it heals. I'd rather make a little sacrifice now then have lasting damage later.

Alas, being broken sucks. I am in a such a lousy mood!
